Bink and Gollie
By Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee
Illustrated by Tony Fucile

Bink and Gollie are two best friends. They do everything together but can't always agree (except for putting on roller skates, they always agree to that.) When it comes to wearing socks, venturing to the Andes Mountains or buying a goldfish a compromise is required. For Bink and Gollie, even though they might not see eye to eye, these two girls will always be the best of friends.

This book was a wonderful read. It was comical, artistic and would be a great way to introduce students to beginner chapter books. It also is a great story on friendship and how friends can work out disagreements. The story itself is good but the illustrations are what brings it to life. Without the pictures, half of the story would be missing. The book could be considered a graphic novel, where it is read like a comic book.

Overall I thought this would be and enjoyable, comical read for 2nd or 3rd graders.

  1. This looks like a really cute book for younger aged students. I agree that it could be a good book for teaching students about how to handle disagreements, and not letting those disagreements ruin their friendships. It also looks like a good introduction to chapter books because it has more words, but it also has pictures to help the students understand the written content. Overall, this was an excellent description of the book.

  2. Kaitlyn, I really enjoyed your reading of this book on Thursday. What impressed me was the emotional content of the story. I found this in the way that the book is about Gollie and Bink's relationship but it does not say so explicitly. That's because, as you said, it's written like a graphic novel-- using dialogue instead of narration. This requires a different type of interaction with the text then a narrated story line. You're interactive questioning during your read-aloud brought our attention to interpreting the text and pictures together.

  3. This book looks absolutely adorable! I think friendship is so important to children and conflict is such a common experience within. It's great that you included that it would be a great introduction to reading chapter books.
